Chapter 4: Surviving

Posted by

“Fight for your LIFE!!!!!!” with the roar of thousands and thousands of crazed people the lone shout was like an ant yelling for an elephant to not step on it.

The people immediately surrounding Sneed starting laughing harder and harder as they heard him yelling with tears streaming down his face. They could feel the emotion in that scream that even seemed to include his soul and hopes.

As they were laughing and enjoying Sneed’s desperation enjoying his soul tormenting pain and anguish they almost started tearing up themselves due to how funny Sneed was.

“Don’t let these bastards kill you without putting up a fight!!!” Sneed yelled out once again. The anguish of the moment clearly reflected on his face.

“That’s why we told you not to bet on the boy. He is the shame of the Underground and he deserves his death. I can’t wait to see him die..hahahahahahaha.” A bearded heavy set man who seemed more like a giant than a human bellowed towards Sneed.

After hearing the bearded man laughing at someone else’s misery hundreds of people started laughing enjoying Sneed’s misery almost as much as they were enjoying the torture of the boy in the pit.

As the group was watching Sneed and no longer watching the boy they saw Sneed’s face change. He had a puzzled look as if though his mind could not process the confusion in front of it. The bearded man who was focused solely on Sneed turned and looked out into the crowd and all he saw was faces of confusion everywhere he looked.

Suddenly Sneed was glowing as if though he was the center of the universe and a smile that covered his entire face replaced the tears and desperation that could swallow a soul with its misery that was previously there.

“Hahahahahahahah….Hahahahahahahaha….” There wasn’t a sound with thousands and thousands of people there so the sudden laughter from Sneed filled the entire Pit.

The bearded man turned around and looked down into the pit and standing above the Kolga was a boy covered in a mixture of blood belonging to him and the Kolga.

The boy turned in there direction and faced them. He looked up to them and he flashed a smile that seemed so innocent and free that it was impossible to associate with the blood that covered the boy.

The bearded man put on the same confused face as the thousands and thousands of others. Who was he smiling at and why?

The bearded man watched as the boy turned around slowly and started limping out of the pit. He was moving extremely slowly as his leg was injured severely. Cuts, tears, and blood was covering every place of the boy but he still walked away with a smile on his face.

“Noooooooooooooooo….this can’t be real!!!”

“Everything, I lost it all.”

“All of it, I saved my whole life its all gone!!!”

“I borrowed that money, it’s impossible to pay it back. I have to leave now.”

“Who wants to be with a broke man, I’m leaving.”

Screams of anguish starting flooding the entire pit. Everyone had bet their entire fortunes and life against the boy. There wasn’t a single one who didn’t bet and every one of them bet on the death of that boy.

Grown men started crying and weeping. A lot of them had bet money that was not theirs and were for clients and the goods and money were transit as they were shipping from one place to another. They were responsible for making sure it got to its destination and instead of getting it there safely they gambled it away.

Others had borrowed the money knowing that it was the easiest money they would ever make.

For the younger people in the crowd this would be a great life lesson. They hadn’t had much time to accumulate a lot of wealth so even though they lost everything it still wasn’t that much. Besides they had lots of time to make more.

For the older people it was the apocalypse. Some of them would have to sell themselves as they could never afford to pay back what was lost while others would be killed without any consideration.

Fear, panic, desperation, sorrow and regret always filled The Pit. As the fighters died it could always be seen in their faces just before death. However for the first time in the history of The Pit the emotions that should normally be seen on the faces of the fighter as they were facing their death was instead on every single face in the crowd. Every single face except one, on a single face was enough hope, joy, excitement and happiness to cancel out all of the other emotions by itself.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

‘I’m going to die.’

Yuto couldn’t help but think that death was slowly creeping it’s way over his mind, body and soul.

The pain in his arm and leg was unbearable. He was feeling light headed from the blood loss to the point that it was getting harder and harder to keep his eyes open.

‘Why am I even trying to stay alive?’ Yuto found himself wondering what he was trying to stay alive for. He was tortured, thrown in prison, then forced to fight to his death while thousands and thousands of people laughed and cheered for him to die.

With the feeling of despair with all of his energy gone Yuto fell onto the ground giving up. As soon as his body fell to the ground he could hear the laughter throughout the crowd as the moment they had been waiting for was here.

Yuto started laughing gently to himself. How pathetic was he? Did he even last 60 seconds against this beast? Now he just needed to wait for it to come and finish him off and all of the last few days would be over. He was going to die without understanding why. His mom would never know what happened to him.

“Fight for your life!!!!”

Through all of the pain and despair. Through the laughter, screaming and cheering of the crowd a single voice echoed in Yuto’s ears.

Someone doesn’t want me to die? Someone out there wants me to fight?

Just as Yuto heard a scream for him to fight for life the Kulga jumped on top him its mouth reaching toward his neck. Once its oversized teach reached his throat his life would fade in only seconds. The bloodlust and anger of the beast could be clearly seen in its eyes. Yuto felt fear deep in the pit of his stomach.

Now…now was the moment that Yuto would have to decide if he would fight back or give up.

Time seemed to slow down for Yuto as the Kulga’s face inched closer to him. He felt the saliva of the beast hit his face as it was rabid and its saliva was flying around.

Why would I want to live? This question was running through Yuto’s head. Even if he lived through this moment would he be sent back into the prison? Would they keep torturing him? Would they make him fight again?

Wouldn’t be easier to just give up?

“Don’t let these bastards kill you without putting up a fight!!!”

That voice rang out in his ears again. Suddenly Yuto had a thought, he was thinking in a way that he had never done before.

“Ha…hahaha…..hahahahahahaha…”Yuto started laughing to himself out loud. Perhaps if someone close enough they could have heard the laughter coming from his mouth but at the moment with the cheering and laughing that was coming down from outside of The Pit no one could notice or hear it.

‘Every second I’m alive is a second those bastards are going to be pissed’ thought Yuto. With that single thought his mind started racing with that very idea.

‘Even if I can only live for another second, minute, hour or day it doesn’t matter. Every second would be a second I would could piss them off. Who cares why I’m here. Who cares why they torture me or force me to fight. I might never find out. All I can do is stick it to them as much as I can until they kill me.’

As that thought ran through Yuto’s head he couldn’t help but feel like laughing. Even if he was going to die he would make them sweat as much as possible. In that fraction of a second he could already see the look on their face as they realized that he was still alive. He didn’t even know what the persons who kidnapped and tortured him looked like but it didn’t matter.

The Kulgas claws on its arms and legs were already tearing Yuto apart as it had made it to him. All that was left was for the Kulga to wrap its sharp teeth around his neck and with a simple bite it would all be over.

Yuto’s clothes were being shredded as the Kulga was clawing and grabbing across his body. Every place the Kulga touched turned red with blood.

It’s face drew down, this was the moment. The Kulga’s eyes stared into Yuto’s eyes as if though it wanted to watch as the life disappeared from them. It didn’t even try to defend itself as it drew its mouth down.

“Hahaha…hahahahaha….hahahahahaha” Yuto was still laughing to himself. There was no longer any thoughts of death, pain, or desperation. The only thing left was the thought of how pissed everyone was going to be if he could survive.

Just as the Kulga’s mouth reached Yuto’s neck Yuto took the knife he was given when he walked into The Pit and held it in front of his neck. He didn’t try and stab with it. He didn’t try and slash or fight back in any way. He simply held it pointed out at his neck with both hands.

The Kulga’s mouth was moving so fast at Yuto’s throat it had no time to stop. Due to the way that Yuto was holding the knife in front of himself the teeth wrapped around both of Yuto’s arms puncturing across both of his forearms.

As the Kulga’s head came down with its mouth open the knife that Yuto was holding out slide through its mouth and out the top of its head.

The Kulga didn’t even have time to scream as its body went limp. Blood from the Kulga poured out all over Yuto as the Kulga lost all life and fell over him.

Yuto as an eight year old weighed no more than 60 pounds at the most while a fully grown Kulga weighed over 70 pounds. The weight of the Kulga laid across Yuto and was crushing him making it impossible for him to breath.

As the blood continued to pour over Yuto he dropped he rocked on his right shoulder and kicked his left leg forcing himself over on his side. With this move he managed to get out from under the Kulga and stand up.

Covered in cuts and blood Yuto could now feel the pain surging through his entire body. He couldn’t feel his leg or arm where it had been stabbed and tried to take a step. He felt himself limp as he was struggling to put pressure on his leg.

For some reason despite the pain, the blood and damage across his entire body he couldn’t help but smile. He realized that he was hearing crying and screaming. The sorrow from the crowd was overwhelming as thousands and thousands of cries of sorrow seemed to be pointed at him.

Looking out across the crowd he could see a man who seemed to be glowing with a smile as large as the entire pit. Due to the distance he couldn’t make out the full details of the man outside of the joy he was exuding which seemed to equal the sorrow of the rest of the pit.

He realized that must have been the man who called out for him to fight. Yuto may never see this man again, he may never find out his name or any information about him but that man became the most important person Yuto had ever met that was not his mom.

Seeing the man he wanted to thank him but he couldn’t get any words out after his fight. The Kulga had crushed him when it died and he was still having trouble breathing much less talking.

He stared in his direction, flashed a smile across his face to say thank you.

He turned around and started walking back to his cell with a single thought.

‘I will live the next second and the second after that. I will piss everyone one of these people off second after second and will laugh about it the whole time.’
