Chapter 1: Nil Home

‘Creakkk’

An old door screeches across the rigid moldy wooden floor, leaving behind scratch marks.

One of the rusty bolts got loose, making the door slightly tilted while the handle was rough to twist open. The room was not that big, having a kid-size bed pointing away from the door, leaving what little legroom to move across the room. However, lying in the way of the legroom, a wooden sword and a couple of wooden knives laid put resting.

A window that is two feet in height and width was smack dead in the middle of the kid-size bed. Sunlight started to develop the room taking away the darkness and removing it with light. Outside the window, the view was breathtaking as the sun was rising from its sleep. The mountains surrounding the cabin seemed as if they were getting absorbed by the sun, and for what snow was sitting right below, the sun was putting on a light show as the light reflected. The window was cracked open, letting in the aroma of the forest come smothering in.

In the small bed, a little kid laid peacefully with his white snow hair poking out of the almost see-through brown sheets while his little feet poked out on the other end.

“Nil, wake up.” A soft, loveable voice called to the kid; however, no response came back.

The little girl was getting closer to Nil, shaking him awake. However, Nil rolled to his right-side opposite from the girl, trying to get more shut-eye. Ignoring the girl, Nil pulled the brown sheets complete over his head, while on the other end, the sheets went to his ankles.

“Nil, if you don’t get up ill get more extreme.” A mischievous smile began to form on the little girl that was standing over Nil.

However, no response was coming from him, making the little girl smile only grow.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

She jumped into the air, pointing her right elbow at Nils’ side, showing no mercury in her attack. Nil, however, showed no sign of moving as he laid there peacefully, but as the right elbow drew closer, only an inch away from hitting its mark, Nil finally reacted swiftly and fast. He took his left hand, hitting the being part of the girl’s right elbow, making it go off course.

The little girl was shocked, but she was determined. After getting her elbow hit away, she couldn’t move it in time to hit Nil’s body, so she had to rely on her last option, which was to fall onto him using her body.

‘Bang’

“What time is it?” Then, finally, the little boy realized he couldn’t sleep anymore, asked an almost irritable voice, still trying to wake up while rubbing the temple part of his head with his right hand.

“The sun just came up.” The little girl, still lying face flat on the Nil, replied with a smile, and a little red mark began to show on her forehead.

Nil poked his full face out of bed, looking at the girl as she slowly got off of him.

“Come on, Boris is already outside.”

Her golden hair shimmered as the sunlight through the window was hitting it. Its length went all the way to the bottom of her back, and her bright red ruby eyes that seemed like an infernal volcano made her look like a beautiful goddess. Finally, she turned her back and started to walk out the door. Her steps carried elegance with her body staying in place, you could put a cup full of water on the top of her head, and nothing would come out of it.

Nil brought his hands to his eyes, rubbing them, trying to fully awake. But, to Nil, waking up from the comfort and warmth surrounding the body from the bed is always a struggle for him, even if the blankets are paper thin. Taking a deep breath, he lifted both of his arms and flung himself out of bed, landing softly onto his feet. He then started to get ready, dragging his body across his room grabbing everything he needed.

He didn’t have much. So for what little clothes were tucked under his bed, he reached down, grabbing the first things his hands touched—taking out a casual brown shirt and some horrendous blue pants. He quickly put it on; however, he noticed a slight hole in the right sleeve of his shirt.

“Uhhhh, I’m going have to fix that later. Great way to start off the day.” All dressed up with a wooden sword on his back and a wooden knife around his hip, he started to head outside.

The sun was still not fully awake, with orange scratched along the sky with a hint of red. However, the atmosphere only complemented the mountain in the distance with a waterfall running down it, making it a scene straight out of a painting. Birds twittered in the trees surrounding the house, making the place full of life. Nil always loved the first sight of walking outside of his home as the scene was always breathtaking.

“Hurry up. Boy, do you think standing is a hobby of mine?” Boris stood out in the middle of the field with a wooden pole standing next to him.

It was a bit beat up with a couple of ships missing from it. However, it didn’t look like it would need to replace anytime soon.

Nil hurried over, looking at his sister, watching her sit down with her legs crossed and eyes closed. Nil couldn’t help but feel jealous of the idea of falling back to sleep after getting out of the house.

Will, technically she’s not his real sister, and Boris is just one of the instructors that live with him and Advis. Nil was told that he was found when he was a baby and that Advis’s father liked him, adopting him in progress. However, to Nil, that makes no difference to him. At least to him, they are his real family.

However, all Advis does is sit and maybe run around for a while. To Nil, though, this is so unfair. ‘Why does she get to do nothing?’

Advis noticed that Nil looked in her direction as a little pink thing came out of her mouth.

“She’s sticking her tongue at me. Oh, don’t worry ill get payback for that,” Nil muttered while smiling. He was already formulating a plan sticking his tongue right back at her.

His smile quickly went away, and he started to get serious when pulling the sword out from behind his back. He got into his stance, raising the wooden sword, and began to hit the pole.

“Ping”

“Ping”

Each time the pole was hit, he would then switch the direction of the wooden sword to attack in a different order. He would always use the rebound of the sword to strike at a new angle.

……..

Three hours passed as Nil swung his sword, hitting the wooden pole with all his might. Each hit would make his sword bounce back just slightly. He would then focus on that feeling and allow his arms to go numb, rebounding on it to put his full strength into it again and again. This process would allow him the maximum amount of hits.

He would turn the sword to both sides of his small structure, hitting the pole from bottom to top on each side. “Nil seems that sword has gotten to light for you. It looks like it’s time for another wooden sword.”
